Days We Spend
United States
Приєднався 9 вер 2019
If you’re looking for tips and advice on how you travel the world longer, relocate to Europe, embrace van life without spending tens of thousands of dollars, or plan for your first (or 50th!) Camino de Santiago - you’ve come to the right place.
We started Days We Spend with a simple goal - to share how we spend our time while traveling the world. Then a funny thing happened.
You guys started following along. And you had some questions.
In 2021, we turned our Honda Element into a micro RV. We've walked across Spain multiple times, traveled around the world for a year, and in 2023 we made the leap to move to Spain full-time on an Non-Lucrative Visa.
Shawn Forno is a travel writer with 15+ years of experience writing for clients and publications including Lonely Planet, Tortuga Backpacks, Matt D’Avella, and HuffPo. Lainey Silver is an international Swing Dance teacher, choreographer, and performer with a client roster that includes Disney, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.

I'm a BIG tortilla fan. Your version is a tad too soft for me (the one with the cebolla caramelizada in O Frade), but I share your overall direction. You go towards the "Betanzos style". Great stuff!. BTW: Since U guys are usually looking for suggestions. Whenever you are finishing the Camino Francés. Chek this tortilla out: O Ceadoiro in Santa Irene. For me, possibly the best tortilla.
Oh yeah. We’re all about that Betanzos style. Gooey and golden. We will absolutely check out that tortilla recommendation since we’re on the hunt for the perfect tortilla. Thanks so much and thanks for watching.
Hi you cool couple!! How's mid September in general on the Primitivo or Portugal?
did you guys use professional help, or did you do it yourself?
We did it ourselves but after talking with Marina it would have cost about the same and been way easier to go with professional help. Either way works, but using a pro is a lot less stressful. Check out Marina with Bureaucracy.es. She’s the best.
Thank you!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Very helpful and informative. Working on a schedule to take my fiancee on the Camino Frances starting September 27th. Tambien el español de los dos, es muy bueno. This video made the choice of the time to go much easier.
Hello if I have most of my documents would you suggest I still get professional help ?
That’s a tough one. I’d say to at least have a call. It depends on how much translation you need and what your specific financial situation is. Always worth a quick chat with a pro to see where you’re at.
No queremos turismo basura en Galicia, coger el avion para Mallorca😂😂
🤡
Un payaso inglés en Galicia😂😂
I think I have more than that in my pants pockets walking around town. I am amazed. I love it. Thanks :)
In Madrid or Barcelona the apartment rent will be 1.200 easily.
I’ve walked 2 Caminos during the winter, on the Camino Portuguese. Got some rain, but it wasn’t too bad. I chose to go during that time, because of life’s circumstances. It was still good, but you are right, not many people. Just finished the Invierno about a month ago. Interesting route. I walked with my oldest daughter (19) and some friends. Didn’t see many pilgrims. Taking the 14 year old on the Portuguese in about 10 days. I’ve already booked all of our rooms ahead of time.
Early on the Camino Frances to about Burgos caña was a small beer and cañon was a large beer.🍺
I’m pretty much just going to copy this whole trip
Hahaha awesome. It’s a good time!
I’m walking the Frances right now, tomorrow I will arrive in Santiago. After a week of rest I will do the Portugues one. Then another week of rest and I want to do the del Norte. Do you think that also equals as enough training to do the Northen route? Because the french and portugues route are way more flat.
Love your videos. Thank you for all the work you put into them.
Thank you so much. We try! And thanks so much for watching. We’re glad they’re helpful. 😁
What the hell is this Honda Element craze?
I started walking Tuesday 14th May at SJPDP and ended 20th June at Fisterre. Perfect weather, perfect time to go. Not massively busy no issues with albergues. We were told because we started mid month its quieter than starting at the start of the month.
Hi guys. Great video and information. I'll be starting the Frances, again, on 4th March next year. There doesn't seem to be a lack of Albergues open then, but what about cafe's and shops? Did you have a problem getting supplies in the smaller towns and villages? It does seem that everything starts to reopen after 15th March or so. Cheers guys.
Being a frequent traveler domestic and international, imho this is one of the most useful one bag travel video out there
Hi, I have enjoyed many of your great, informative videos. I am wondering how you overcome the 2-step authentication process required by US banks and government agencies, in which a US phone number is needed? I understand that a local number in Spain is also required? Is there a low cost way of accomplishing this?
Thank you, I am looking to do a Camino Frances in early spring/ late winter 2025 and thi is very helpful. About laundry in cold times: fill two PET-bottles with very hot water (close them) and put your socks on the bottle. It will dry in minutes.
Thank you for this video. I am planning a walk in 2025 or 26. This information was great! Gracias!
Decisions decisions, last year I walked in early August and it was fine. I am currently in Australia and was planning to find and book flights this weekend to return mid August and finish the journey but from Sarria sounds crazier than I ever seen it in Spring before. I did bypass one year by jumping up from Sarria to Lugo by buss and walk from there into Melide which was OK but like so many of the alternates trails there is way too much road walking
Thank you for all this information, it'svery helpful! I'm planning to do the Primitivo and then the Frances in Fall after I retire. (2027) I was supposed to do the Primitivo a few years ago with a friend but then I couldn’t go, so he went alone. I'm a couple of months older than him, so I'm going to do the Primitivo up to where it meets the Frances, then go up to meet him in Saint Jean, after he retires, and we'll do the Frances together all the way to Santiago. And then I'll head back to North America (we're Canadian) to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2028 😁 And after that, perhaps retire to Spain for a few years to hike all the trails I can in Europe. Tour du Mont Blanc is definitely on the list! And all the other Caminos, of course.
Thanks for sharing this info, my wife and I would like to walk Portuguese route towards the end of September.
Buen Camino!
very interesting notes
Thanks!
I walked the Portuguese route twice. Once in March/April and once in September. March was MUCH quieter but more rainy. Walking the Baztan then the French way this September so who knows what it will be like then. Thanks again for the info.
Thanks for sharing your Portuguese experience. We don’t have any first hand knowledge of that one. Buen camino!
Greetings from a Galician, very good video. Thank you for showing my land 😊
Thank you 🥰
Well done,
Thank you!
My friends and I (in that 'mature' age category) started our Camino Frances in September, thinking there would be fewer pilgrims than the summer. But no. But it was beautiful and after the first three stages it thinned out and became much easier to find beds (most of the time). The biggest "shock" was Sarria - as you say, the pilgrim population exploded. And the morning we left Sarria, bus loads of school children unloaded - sounding like a rushing river - and it was like salmon trying to swim upriver together. But all those schoolchildren were very pleasant to walk with and they switched to English to ask us questions and learn about us, and then they were quickly by us at a speed we couldn't match. This was another fantastic video with excellent humor, information and insights. Looking to start my Le Puy Camino September '25, hopefully lava tree free.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! 😍 Bon Chemin!
For me discovering Camino was like discovering fire. Jarra! Jarra! 🥃🥃
That’s awesome!
What's requirements from my clients, because i am a seo expert, my clients is a person, not a company and we have contract for 3 year.
Can I work in Spain with this visa like a delivery or something. Thanks
Lol... What is an eco-friendly dye??? Lmao
I need to move ASAP! I'm sitting in my neighborhood bar in NYC watching your video on my phone. My ONE glass of wine is $19. This is my second one so effectively I will spend more on 2 glasses of wine + tip, than you did on your date night. And I am STARVING!! Unbelievable....I'm afraid I may drink too much once I live there.
Haha yeah it’s not super fair to compare the price of wine here to NYC, but we hear ya. It’s a pretty sweet deal.
I think you both set a good example for others to follow. It was smart to do and will be more fun, next time.
Thank you!
I have an upcoming inn-to-inn walking tour in Europe and was planning to use a small day pack; however, I recently got an ICD implanted in my chest on which the left shoulder strap would be pressing, so I'm thinking of leaving that spot alone to recover and pressing my lumbar pack, an old Mountainsmith Tour, into duty. Seeing you do this on the Camino tells me I should have no issues doing so on my day hikes. The end of day packs may be near for me.
Sounds like a good idea to use the lumbar pack!
La mágica Galicia. Dentro de dos meses esa Galicia invernal se convertirá en un jardín; un paraíso. Estáis en una tierra, Galicia, muy distinta de la idea que los medios españoles transmiten de España. Galicia is different. Una Comunidad Autónoma, nacionalidad según dice la Constitución española, con Santiago de Compostela como capital y ciudad patrimonio de la humanidad. Gracias por mostrar la hermosa Galicia.
❤
Just found you two - since I'm binging videos about the Camino. My husband and I, are "hopefully" going to be able to do ours Spring 2025. I have to say, you two are so cute, you had me smiling and cracking up with how you laugh at each other. Love the light heartedness and fun approach to doing the camino and walking. After all, if it's not fun - why do it. Thanks!
Thanks so much!! Camino 2025! You've got this!
Such a great video, I'm hoping to walk the walk (maybe talk the talk too lol) in stages over the next few years. Can I ask what time of year would you say is the sweet spot weather wise. I'm talking the Goldilocks of dry, 20c during the day and no lower than 10c at night. Cheers.
Thanks so much. There really isn't a goldilocks season in Spain. The weather is sooo variable in Spring and Fall and as you walk, you are passing through a few different climate systems. We have a video coming out today about choosing a season to walk. :)
Thanks for sharing.
This was really helpful and detailed. Best video I've seen. I thought you needed a rental agreement in order to apply fro the visa. Do you not have to provide information on accommodation? So basically, I should select an appointment ~3 month out correct, and start working on everything?
Thank you! The rental agreement requirement is dependent on your consulate. In Los Angeles, we didn't need to have a rental agreement. We didn't provide any accommodation information except the city we moved to. 3 months is usually the correct amount of time to get all your paperwork together, especially since stuff expires.
@@DaysWeSpend Thanks for responded. You literally responded "while" I'm watching your latest video on "costs to eat out"..haha. At what point do you have to give up your passport? Is this the day you have your appointment? I am traveling for the next few months and need my passport but wanted to start the process and just seeing if I have to wait to get back from Turkey. Thanks again and keep up the videos. You guys are great.!
@@ninobk196 Lol, that's so funny! For the NLV process, it's best to officially start it once you are back from your travels (if you are gone for more than 3 months). Until then, you can familiarize yourself with everything. Get in contact with translators, contact your banks.
Been there in 2022 to visit an Ourense local friend…such a beautiful city. Hoping to be back there this year. 🥰
Loved your vid. Quite the experience moving to a new country. Was looking about Castellon de la Plana and how safe it is for college level students. My son is considering moving there.
Thank you!
I hope you also review luggages and backpacks and storages on those backpacks - because as a Filipino who travels mainly southeast asia - i always get the feeling I am being shortened by the 7 kg since the luggage is already 2.5-3 kg already. Anyway, you are doing a great review! please keep it up!
Thanks so much! We've had issues with the backpack thing, too. Totally understand the frustrated feeling about 7 kg. We like the Tortuga backpacks. They just released a lighter version.
Adopt me, take me for a husband. I will consider any options for moving to you! By the way, I also have a Honda Element, but 2003. I am 39 years old.
So, my goal is to be in Spain on August 12 2026. See you then, maybe!
Sounds like a plan! Buena suerte. 👍🏻
Are there a lot of water fountains in the way? And thanks for answering me.
We found plenty of water options on the Via Podiensis.
Los Vinos is such a great area, but almost impossible to get a table if you get there too late. The feria del Pulpo is coming up in Carballiño soon!
It really is! Many people reserve tables on the weekends, too.
